The relationship between members of Congress and the journalists who cover them can be testy at times. But it will be all fun and games as lawmakers and reporters square off in the Press vs. Politicians Spelling Bee at the legendary National Press Club in downtown Washington on Wednesday, Sept. 20. More than 200 journalists, politicians, and spelling fanatics will join us to cheer spellers as they spar while enjoying refreshments. Gen. Paul Nakasone, head of the National Security Agency and the U.S. Cyber Command, will speak at a National Press Club Headliners luncheon on Sept. 28. Nakasone has served as commander of the U.S. Cyber Command since 2016 and director of the National Security Agency since May 2018. Nakasone has held command and staff positions across all levels of the Army with assignments in Korea, Iraq and Afghanistan. Veterans Affairs Secretary Denis McDonough will speak at a National Press Club Headliners Luncheon on Monday, Nov. 6. McDonough will deliver an update on the state of America’s veterans and their families, and the implementation of the PACT Act, which expands medical benefits to veterans exposed to toxins from burn pits on military bases. Photo by Alan Kotok Tickets are on sale for the 2023 National Press Club Press vs. Politicians Spelling Bee, which will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 20, in the ballroom. Doors (and the bar!) open at 6 p.m. The event, which supports the National Press Club Journalism Institute, pits members of Congress against Beltway journalists in an evening of camaraderie and entertainment. 2022 champion Amy Wang of the Washington Post will return to defend her title. Tickets are $15 for members, $30 for non-members and can be purchased online.
