Club members invited to screening of documentary, 'Why Does Zip Code Matter?,' tonight
Club member Erickson Blakney invites National Press Club members to join a virtual screening of a new documentary, "Why Does Zip Code Matter," presented by the Fair Housing Center, tonight, April 29, on Facebook and YouTube from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Blakney, a filmmaker, journalist and philanthropy professional, produced the film. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion, moderated by Blakney, with experts featured in the film.

In bipartisan letter, 80 members of Congress urge Biden to work for release of journalist Austin Tice
A bipartisan letter was sent Tuesday to President Joe Biden, signed by 44 Senators (nearly half of the Senate) and 36 Representatives, asking him to work urgently toward the safe return of veteran U.S. Marine Corps captain and award-winning journalist Austin Tice, who has been held in Syria since August 14, 2012. Austin, a Georgetown graduate and law student, was detained near Damascus three days after his 31st birthday while covering escalating conflict in the region. This year the United Nations' “International Jazz Day” on Friday, April 30, is being produced by National Press Club member Harry Schnipper, executive director of the longtime Washington, D.C., jazz venue, Blues Alley. Feature of the observance is a one-night virtual event at 5 p.m., April 30, presenting top artists from the "Embassy Jazz Series," a multicultural, colorfully creative potpourri of artists, countries and music. New scholarship supports diversity in broadcast journalism
A newly established broadcast journalism scholarship at the National Press Club supports diversity within the field while honoring longtime radio journalist Wes Vernon, a former Club member. The Wes Vernon Broadcast Scholarship will provide $5,000 annually to a student who demonstrates a commitment to a career in broadcast journalism. The award can be renewed up to three years for a total of $20,000 toward educational expenses.
