Documentary on history of the black press to screen, Friday
The award-winning documentary, “The Black Press: Soldiers Without Swords,” which chronicles the little-known history, accomplishments and influence of the black press in the United States, will be screened at the National Press Club at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 28. The compelling film premiered on PBS in 1999 and was showcased by NPR during the March on Washington Film Festival. The showing in the Cosgrove Lounge is sponsored by the Club's Events Team. Peace Corps Operations
Mr. Vasquez spoke on the anniversary of President Kennedy's speech announcing the formation of the Peace Corps. Mr. Vasquez became director of the organization in 2002. The Peace Corps currently oversees more than 7,500 volunteers who serve in 71 different countries. Award-winning broadcast journalist William Greenwood, 77
William "Bill" Greenwood, an award-winning broadcaster and executive with Mutual Broadcasting, UPI Audio and ABC News, died Jan. 19. He was 77 and had been a member of the National Press Club since 2006. Greenwood, who lived in Washington, won a 2005 Edward R. Murrow Award for outstanding news coverage from the Radio Television Digital News Association, and a 2002 Peabody/duPont award from the Columbia School of Journalism for live coverage of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
