Afghanistan war reporters hope for more moderate Taliban, fear return of repression following U.S. withdrawal
Afghanistan war correspondents said the country is different from the one the United States and its allies invaded in 2001 but expressed concern about repressive Taliban rule now that it is back in control. But he does not believe it will stay that way once the group consolidates power. "For us this is the calm before the storm," Mohseni said at a Sept. 3 National Press Club Headliners event. "There’s little doubt that will…

Members' photo exhibit opens with reception, 6 pm Sept. 9
Photojournalist Christy Bowe was positioned on the east side of the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 when rioters stormed the building. As the crowd left the Ellipse and neared the Capitol, Bowe noticed a particular line of marchers she later learned were the Proud Boys. "Then they saw my pass, and started screaming 'F*** the media.'" Bowe's photo of that Proud Boys group is now on display in the National Press Club lobby through Sept. 30 as part of the Club's…

Club travelers stranded abroad on 9/11 took long way home
The 20-year anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the United States brings back unforgettable memories of a National Press Club trip to South America in September 2001. The Club's then-Travel Committee and former Club travel agent Richard Meyer had long planned a journey to Buenos Aires, the famed Iguassu Falls, Rio de Janeiro and the Amazon jungle. The last stop was a rustic lodge on an inlet to the Black River, some 10 miles north of where the black waters of the river flow into the brown waters of the Amazon River. I was a Travel Committee member and the trip leader for a group of…
