Channel 9's Investigative Reporter to Address Young Members
Russ Ptacek, investigative reporter for WUSA Channel 9, will be the next speaker at Young Members Committee's "Piano Lessons." The event will take place beginning at 6:30 pm Wednesday, June 5, in the McClendon Room. Ptacek has won awards for his investigations and is a speaker at journalism conferences. If It's the Last Wednesday, It Must Be Lobster Night
May 29 is the last Wednesday of the month, and that means Lobster Night at the Fourth Estate Restaurant. Steamed 1 1/4-pound lobsters will be served from 5:30-8:30 pm, along with cole slaw or salad, and French fries or oven-crisped new potatoes. The cost is $25 for members and $30 for nonmembers. Please reserve at least 24 hours in advance at 202-662-7638. A very limited number of lobsters will be available for those without reservations. Don't like lobster? John Fleming, Longtime Club Member, to be Buried at Arlington
John P. Fleming, a longtime member of the National Press Club and a Silver Owl, will be buried in Arlington National Cemetery on June 20. He was 85 and died at home in Alexandria on March 30. The cause of death was cancer. The 8:45 a.m. funeral at Arlington will include full military honors. A brunch will be held immediately following the service in the Ft. Meyer Officer's Club. Members of the National Press Club are invited. Fleming was manager of government services for the National Safety Council. Walter Cronkite IV and historian Maurice Isserman will discuss and sign copies of their book, "Cronkite's War: His World War II Letters Home," at 6:30 pm June 4 at the Club. Members of a panel on immigration disagreed on prospects for legislation in 2013 at a May 20 event co-sponsored by the Club’s International Correspondents Committee and International Center for Journalism. Club Member Buth Becomes American Legion Commander for D.C.
Jonathan Buth, a past commander of the Club's American Legion Post 20, was elected Commander of American Legion's Department of the District of Columbia on Sunday, May 19. He will hold the position, equivalent to a state American Legion commander, for one year. The D.C. Department represents nearly 2,000 members from 23 posts. Buth retired from the Air Force in 1995 after a 27-year career as an officer and pharmacist.
