At a National Press Club luncheon Mr. Gillespie discussed the results of the November 2 presidential election. He talked about President Bush's victory, as well as Republican gains in the Congress. He discussed the campaign strategies that he feels were successful, as well as issues that resonated with voters. He responded to questions from members of the audience. Democratic National Committee Chairman Terry McAuliffe was also scheduled to appear but did not.

John Williams, pioneer writer on disabilities, dies at 74
John M. Williams, a pioneer writer on disability issues and a 22-year member of the National Press Club, died on Feb. 24. Williams, who lived in Fairfax, Va., was 74. He was the founder and former publisher of Assistive Technology News, a tabloid newspaper that covered assistive technology products and disabilities issues. Williams started writing about disabilities in 1978 and in 1982 coined the phrase "assistive technology" to describe products designed to benefit persons with disabilities. To boost policy story readership, use personal stories, emotional reactions, speakers advise
Provoking an emotional reaction and providing a clear call to action are ways to make policy stories more accessible to a wider audience, speakers said Friday at a National Press Club Journalism Institute event. Speaking at a half-day training session on how to report and write policy stories for the general public, former Politico, National Journal and McClatchy reporter and editor Andie Coller said if a story inspires an emotional reaction and shows how it can personally affect readers or people close to them, they will be more likely to read it.
