Picasso raffle to save ancient city announced at Newsmaker
The president of an international association discussed efforts to save the ancient Phoenician city of Tyre, Lebanon from the ravages of time and damage from hostility in the region at a June 12 Newsmaker. Tyre, located on the southern coast of Lebanon, is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site and faces some risks of degradation. Longtime newspaper man Charles Eischen, 47-year Club member, dies at 90
Charles Eischen, a long-time newspaperman who ran the city desk at the Marin Independent Journal and the Washington bureau for the San Francisco Examiner, died June 10, 2013 in Petaluma, Calif. He was 90. Mr. Eischen, a National Press Club member from 1962 until 2009, was awarded the Bronze Star for service with the U.S. Army during World War II. He saw action during the Battle of the Bulge and was among the leading Army elements that took the Remagen Bridge in Germany. International Correspondents have moving visit to U.S. Holocaust Museum
Members of the International Correspondents Committee visited the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum on June 14 as the museum commemorates its 20th anniversary. The museum, located near the Mall between 14th and 15th streets, attracts thousands of visitors each day of every age from around the world. Committee members found the museum a very effective teaching institution and noted the visitors, including normally rambunctious teenagers, were quiet, respectful and somber as thy viewed the exhibits, photos and films.
