Thomas R. Frieden, M.D., director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, will report on major health issues and challenges at a Tuesday, Sept. 10, National Press Club luncheon. CDC is charged with protecting public health and safety via the control and prevention of disease, injury and disability. A former Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence called for a bipartisan commission armed with subpena powers to investigate the Benghazi affair that cost the lives of a U.S. ambassador and three other Americans. Club Softball Most Successful Season in Team History
The National Press Club softball team finished second in the Metropolitan Media Softball League playoffs for the first time in team history on Saturday, July 13. After losing to Comcast SportsNet 5-4 for their first loss of the 2013 playoffs, the team rallied to beat Allbritton 3-2 on a walk-off double by Sophia Cope, keeping their season alive. The third and final game of the day came against Comcast again, which defeated the Press Clubbers 8-3, ending the most successful season in NPC team history. Watch the video wrap-up below:

Tom Young and The Warriors Book Rap
National Press Club Member Tom Young discussed his latest book, The Warriors, at a book rap hosted by the Club’s Book and Author Committee. Young brings forward the protagonists, Col. Parsons and Sophia Gold, from his earlier books and puts them at an air base in Kyrgyzstan dealing with a Bosnian arms dealer named Victor Dusek. His story kicks off when a plane carrying opium crashes in a thunderstorm at the air base. The book contains flashbacks to the 1990's during periods of "Ethnic Cleansing” in the Balkans. All National Press Club members receive complimentary evening and weekend parking at the PMI garage at 1325 G St., N.W. when they spend $20 at the Reliable Source or Fourth Estate restaurants.
