Voter Empowerment Action Project (VEAP) President Yvette Lewis announced formation of a new citizen-to-citizen outreach program, called Voter Connect, to connect voters across all states, at a May 5 National Press Club Newsmaker. VEAP, formed to educate voters about their state’s election laws, will pilot Voter Connect in North Carolina, Lewis said. The National Press Club voiced strong concern May 5 over a spate of recent physical attacks and kidnappings affecting journalists covering the conflict in eastern Ukraine. The rash of recent kidnappings includes the brief detainment and interrogation on May 2 of BuzzFeed correspondent Mike Giglio, his translator Olena Glazunova, and a CBS News team. Broder Fourth Estate Award
The National Press Club held its annual dinner to award its 1988 Fourth Estate Award. After sometimes humorous speeches by Lou Cannon, James Baker and Jack Germond, Mr. Roderick presented the Fourth Estate Award to David Broder. Mr. Broder, a national political correspondent, then reminisced about his career and humorously thanked his journalist friends and his family.
