March 18, 1908: A second meeting to organize a National Press Club is held in the F Street Parlor at the New Willard Hotel. A constitution and by-laws are adopted after heated discussion, in particular, of a rule forbidding the granting of any credit by the Club to members, i.e., that food, drink and anything else furnished must be paid for in cash. William O. Spurgeon, managing editor of the Post, is elected the Club’s first president. David Dear, an appreciation
Older members of the National Press Club remember David Dear as an unassuming but stalwart member who contributed substantially to the development of the Press Building and the fledgling National Press Foundation. He was 86 when he died Feb. 22. Starting in the late 1970s, he served as an officer or board member of all three entities. He was elected to the Press Club board, eventually becoming vice-president, and was an original board member of the foundation, which was incorporated as an arm of the club by Robert Ames Alden when he was the club’s president in 1976. NPC welcomes Irish Rose of Tralee during St. Patricks's Day festivities
The National Press Club welcomed the reigning Rose of Tralee, Haley O'Sullivan, 25, of Dallas, Texas, at a March 15 lunch in the Club's Fourth Estate restaurant. She was selected through contests in communities in Ireland and countries with Irish descendants. The town of Tralee in county Kerry in Southwest Ireland has held an August festival, during which the Rose of Tralee is selected, since 1959.
