Myron Belkind becomes the new Club president at the annual membership meeting beginning at noon EST today. Outgoing President Angela Greiling Keane will pass the gavel to Belkind, who will outline his agenda for 2014. Club officers also will deliver membership and financial reports. The National Press Club called today for the immediate release of five Al Jazeera journalists held prisoner in Egypt. "The ongoing imprisonment of these men and the continuing efforts of the Egyptian government to suppress Al Jazeera's reporting should be seen as anathema to supporters everywhere of the public's right to an independent and critical press," National Press Club President Angela Greiling Keane said. Tickets are still available for Wednesday's Club luncheon with International Monetary Fund Managing Director Christine Lagarde. She will speak immediately after returning from a trip to Africa. Vietnam today: Photos illustrate the years since the U.S. withdrawal
How Vietnam has changed since the U.S. withdrawal in 1973 will be the subject of a presentation at noon on Thursday, Jan. 16, in the McClendon Room at a meeting of the NPC's American Legion Post 20. Post Commander Ken Dalecki will use photos from his three-week tour of the country to illustrate Vietnam today and the lingering legacy of the conflict. Dalecki was a Navy photojournalist in 1967-'68 stationed at Subic Bay, the Philippines, the primary support base for the U.S. 7th Fleet during the war.
