Harkin unveils pension reform plan to wipe out 'dark cloud' of retirement savings crisis
Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, confronting what he sees as a dire shortfall in Americans’ retirement savings, proposed at a National Press Club Newsmaker Jan. 30 a new type of private pension system that would automatically enroll workers and help save them 6 percent of their pay each year. Club speaks out against restrictions on reporters in China
The National Press Club expressed profound concern Jan. 30 about reports that the Chinese government is restricting the ability of foreign journalists to do their jobs in that country. New York Times reporter Austin Ramzy was forced to leave China over delays in processing his press credentials. What Do Americans Know About Geography?
Mr. Grosvenor talked about the results of a Gallup Organization survey of persons around the world on geographical knowledge. He said the results were poor, indicating poor readiness to deal with the world. Knowledge of geography also is necessary to understand politics, history, and other fields. He also said that the National Geographic Society is helping to train geography teachers. Mr. Gallup joined him briefly during the question-and-answer session.
