Mr. Young argues that the current retreat in civil rights has been largley due to policies enacted by the Republican administrations of the 1970s and 1980s. The retreat to which he refers relates to his assertion that while political equality among the races has been ensured, social and economic equality has not. He urges that the civil rights movement continue its move away from political rights and towards economic rights.

Civil liberties dead zone event Thursday evening postponed
The National Press Club Freedom of the Press Committee panel scheduled for Thursday evening to probe the federal government's under-reported practice of examining the electronic devices of reporters and other individuals crossing into the United States, has been postponed because of forecast bad weather.
