Supreme Court Campaign Finance Case Is Subject of Oct. 1 Newsmaker
A U.S. Supreme Court case that could allow donors to give millions of dollars more than they now can contribute to federal campaigns is the subject of a Newsmaker event at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Club. Talking about McCutcheon v. FEC will be Trevor Potter, a former Federal Election Commission chairman and founding president and general counsel of the Campaign Legal Center, and Fred Wertheimer is founder and president of Democracy 21, an advocacy group that lobbies for stronger campaign finance laws. The event will be held in the First Amendment Lounge.

Forty years after Robert Bork carried out the firing of Watergate special prosecutor Archibald Cox at the behest of President Richard Nixon, the National Press Club will host a retrospective of what has become known as the ``Saturday Night Massacre. The National Press Club criticized Thursday the decision by an Illinois county judge last week to hold a Patch.com reporter in contempt of court and to impose hundreds of dollars in daily fines after the reporter refused to reveal the source of leaked police reports.
