Club members will be asked to approve a $1-a-month increase in dues and the club's strategic plan for 2014-18 at a General Membership meeting Friday, Oct. 4, in the conference rooms at noon. First black Miss Israel embraces Ethiopian roots
Miss Israel Yityish "Titi" Aynaw, the country's first Ethiopian-born pageant queen, visited the Naitonal Press Club Sept. 25 as part of a U.S. tour. Aynaw, orphaned as a child and sent to live with her grandparents in Israel, is part of a small community of Ethiopian Jews. Aynaw, who became a model after completing her service in the Israeli Army, toured the Club and met with reporters and Club members. Club Vice President Myron Belkind presented Aynaw with the traditional NPC coffee mug. Aynaw, crowned in February, will represent Israel in the Miss Universe pageant Nov. 9 in Russia. In…

Nominations for Club Offices and Board Open Through Oct. 25
Nominations for Club officers and seats on the Board of Governors will remain open until Oct. 25, according to the Election Calendar adopted by the Board. Candidates must get a certain number of valid signatures on petitions, depending on what office they are running for, and submit them by the deadline. This will be the first election in which Club members will be able to vote online. Religious Beliefs Are "Totally Arbitrary," Author Dawkins Tells Club
Most people believe the religion of their parents and that is “totally arbitrary,” Richard Dawkins told a Club Book Rap Sept. 30. Dawkins was at the Press Club promoting his new book, ``An Appetite for Wonder.'' The book is part one of his autobiography. Part two should be available in a couple of years, he said. Sally Quinn, editor-in-chief of the Washington Post’s “On Faith” Blog, interviewed Dawkins. Quinn said she decided she was an atheist at age 5. Famed Photographer John Launois Is Subject of Exhibit and Book Rap
The Club is featuring an exhibit of the works of the late photojournalist John Launois, and a discussion of his book, ``L'Americain: A Photojournalist's Life,'' by his son and coauthor Chris Pan Launois. Launois recorded some of the most iconic images of the 1960s, including presidents, the Beatles, Malcolm X, wars, riots, and natural disasters.
