Former Governor John P. Donnelly Passes Away
John P. Donnelly, a former member of the National Press Club Board of Governors, passed away Nov. 7 after several months battling liver cancer. Donnelly is the father of John M. Donnelly, also a former board member and Press Club officer who still chairs the NPC's Press Freedom Committee. The elder Donnelly was a successful public-relations executive in business, government and the non-profit sector. NPC plans Newsmaker regarding debut of Swan Lake with African-American ballerina
Representatives of the Washington Ballet, the Evermay Chamber Orchestra and American Ballet Theatre (ABT) Soloist Misty Copeland plan to discuss their joint venture for the April 2015 debut of "Swan Lake" at a National Press Club Newsmakers press conference on Tuesday, Nov. 18 at 10 a.m. in the NPC's Holeman Lounge. Nov. 11, 2013: Charles Schwab CEO Walter W. Bettinger calls for fundamental reforms in the 401(k) industry at a National Press Club Luncheon. More than 50 million Americans are enrolled in retirement plans, he noted, and individual 401(k)s are now the primary or exclusive vehicle for such savings. These are far riskier than employer-pension plans, which were based on greater resources and expertise. Online voting for National Press Club offices begins today, Nov. 10
Online voting for National Press Club officers and board members starts today and runs through Thursday, Dec. 11 at 5 p.m. Paper ballots will be available at the Press Club on Election Day, Friday, Dec. 12 from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Members can log in and click here to read candidate statements and to vote. A step-by-step guide to online voting is available here. The Membership department will have a computer available in the General Offices, Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. if you would like staff assistance.

Veterans groups should keep pressure on the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to improve the delivery of medical care, Veterans advocate Jessie Jane Duff told a Nov. 5 meeting of National Press Club American Legion Post. A pastor made a passionate plea at a National Press Club Newsmakers event Nov, 4 to end the unequal justice system that led to the Aug. 9 shooting death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri. The pastor, Jim Wallis, traveled to Ferguson on Oct. 13 to get a firsthand view of the situation and was arrested with many other faith leaders.
