Alveda King, daughter of civil rights activist A.D. This Week In National Press Club History Dec. 15, 1921: President Warren G. Harding, former publisher of the Marion, Ohio Daily Star, and the only president since the Club’s founding in 1908 to be professionally qualified for National Press Club membership, casts his vote at the annual NPC election. While in the White House, Harding voted in other Club elections, attended Club events, and played poker with reporters on at least one occasion. Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard M. National Endowment for the Humanities chairman to address NPC, Jan. 15
The new chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities William "Bro" Adams will outline his plans for the endowment’s future -- including its 50th anniversary activities in 2015 -- at a National Press Club luncheon on Jan. 15. Adams, the 10th chairman of the NEH, will use his speech to launch the agency’s new initiative “The Common Good: The Humanities in the Public Square.” This initiative is designed to demonstrate the critical role humanities scholarship can play in public life. Speakers Committee taking applications for membership
The National Press Club Speakers Committee is seeking applications from members who think they can help bring top-name luncheon speakers to the Club. The Speakers Committee is the one invitation-only committee at the National Press Club. Club welcomes court decision to protect reporter's source
The National Press Club welcomed an appellate court's decision that an Illinois reporter cannot be compelled to reveal the identity of an anonymous source. The Third District Appellate Court on Monday overturned a Will County circuit court's ruling that Patch.com editor Joseph Hosey must reveal who had provided him with police reports that had informed a story he wrote about two January 2013 murders in Joliet, Ill. When Hosey refused to comply with the lower court order, the judge found him in criminal contempt and fined him thousands of dollars, even though Illinois has a qualified shield…

William Beller, Golden Owl and designer of the 'Spruce Goose', dies at 95
William Beller, a former Golden Owl member of the NPC, died Nov. 7 at the age of 95 in a hospital in Delray Beach, Fla. Mr. Beller retired in 1984 as the head of ocean island programs at the Environmental Protection Agency. He was an author and co-author of several books and numerous technical articles and played a role in the creation of several federal agencies. Born in Cleveland in 1919, Mr. Beller earned a masters degree in aeronautical engineering from New York University in 1942 and was one of the principal designers of the famed Howard Hughes eight-engined "Spruce Goose" transport…
