National Press Club member Alisa Parenti, a broadcast correspondent at MarketWatch Radio Network, was recognized Aug. 13 for her reporting on personal finance by the Radio Television Digital News Association and the National Endowment for Financial Education. Parenti won in the radio category for "outstanding work" on personal-finance issues. Parenti's winning entry, called "Housing on Fire," offered tips for buyers and sellers in a hot real-estate market. National Press Club wants answers on reported abuse of reporters in Missouri
The National Press Club expressed deep concern Aug. 13 about reports that at least two reporters covering unrest in Ferguson, Missouri, were manhandled and detained by police officers there. According to multiple accounts, Wesley Lowery of the Washington Post and Ryan Reilly of the Huffington Post were roughed up by officers, detained and later released. The officers did not provide their names to the journalists, the reports said. Member invites National Press Club members to a study trip to Turkey in mid-November
National Press Club Member Mehmet Saracoglu invites National Press Club members, both journalists and communicators, to Rumi Forum`s upcoming study trip to Turkey, Nov. 14-23. To participate in the trip, NPC members will need to purchase their own airfare to and from Turkey and provide $500 for domestic flights within Turkey. The Rumi Forum will cover all other expenses including accommodations, ground transportation and meals. However, if any NPC members wish to reimburse Rumi Forum for these costs, they may do so. NPC's Fourth Estate restaurant closes Aug. 25 for summer break
The Fourth Estate restaurant at the National Press Club will be closed for one week beginning Monday, Aug. 25 through Labor Day Sept. 1. It will reopen for regular dining hours beginning Tuesday, Sept. 2. Press Club members can still enjoy lunch and dinner in the NPC's Reliable Source.

The National Press Club mourns the loss of an American classic, Lauren Bacall, who passed away at the age of 89 on Aug 12. In February 1945, then-Vice President Harry S. Truman played during one of the many World War II canteens at the National Press Club. Young Hollywood starlet Lauren Bacall had not yet achieved widespread fame when an iconic photo was taken. Truman was playing for an audience of nearly 800 servicemen while Bacall lounged on the upright piano. Photos of this event appeared all over the world, including in Life Magazine on May 17, 1945, and was reprinted so often it became…

Memorial Mass for Marilou Donahue to be held Sept. 9 at Annunciation Church
A memorial Mass for National Press Club member Marilou Donahue will be held at 11 a.m. Sept. 9 at The Church of the Annunciation in Washington, D.C. The church is located at 3810 Massachusetts Ave., NW. All Press Club members and friends of Donahue are welcome. Her family suggests any donations in her memory be made to IONA or The Church of the Annunciation. Donahue, a Club member since 1998 and an active member of the Speakers Committee, died on Aug. 8.
