Washington Capitals coach to address Club luncheon July 8
The coach of the Washington Capitals, Barry Trotz, will discuss the performance of the local hockey team after his first year at the helm and will look ahead to next season at a National Press Club luncheon Wednesday, July 8. Trotz completed his first season with the Capitals with a playoff run after leading the Nashville Predators for 15 seasons. He ranks third all-time in both games coached and wins with a single franchise. Judges needed for NPC Newsletter Journalism contest
The National Press Club needs some judges for the Newsletter Journalism Award in the Club’s annual journalism contest. The judging will be done during the month of May and a winning nominee chosen by the panel, often at a lunch at the Club, by the end of that month. A background in newsletter journalism is a big plus, and any judges need to have experience in journalism, even if they’re now working as communicators. Scott Perry, R-Pa., will discuss his proposed Charlotte’s Web Medical Access Act to legalize therapeutic hemp and cannabidiol (CBD) by excluding them from the Controlled Substance Act at a National Press Club Newsmaker on Wednesday, April 22 at 10 a.m. in the Bloomberg Room. At least 14 states, including Virginia, Wisconsin and Georgia, have already legalized therapeutic hemp for treatment of chronic diseases. A special menu and a nine-piece jazz ensemble will help the Fourth Estate Restaurant celebrate DC Jazz Week on Wednesday. A nine-piece jazz ensemble from the Israeli Thelma Yellen School for the Arts will play at 6:45 pm and 7:45 pm and a special $40 Israeli themed prix fixe menu will offered at the Fourth Estate. A reminder to keep the lens cap on and your cell-phone camera off on the 14th floor
A reminder that picture-taking is prohibited on the 14th floor, which is reserved for Club members and guests. “It wasn’t long ago that you needed a dedicated camera to shoot a photo,” NPC President John Hughes said. “Now we all walk around with digital devices that take pictures. Don’t risk the embarrassment of being approached by a staff member or board member if you start to snap away upstairs.” You can take all the pictures you want on the 13th floor, but not one flight above. Even selfies are prohibited.
