Most of the U.S. journalists who have been jailed defending the First Amendment will gather at 6 p.m. Monday, June 1, at the National Press Club to support protecting whistleblowers and journalists from retribution and prosecution. Nearly a dozen speakers at the event will be members of the media who have been fined, detained or jailed for protecting the identity of confidential sources. Former NY Times reporter to discuss time behind bars at June 1 press freedom event
Judith Miller spent 85 days in jail in late 2005 for refusing to reveal a source who leaked the identity of a covert CIA agent. Miller will discuss that experience when she joins nearly a dozen other "jailbird" journalists at 6 p.m. Monday, June 1, at the National Press Club for a landmark symposium on the need for stronger legal protections for reporters. Patricia Fenton, government information specialist, was 52-year Club member
Patricia Fenton, a 52-year member of the National Press Club, died March 27 at The Devon Senior Living in Devon, Pa. She was 93. A long-time resident was Washington, D.C., Fenton started her writing career at 17 while in Brattleboro (Vt.) High School as a stringer for the Springfield (Mass.) Republican. She served in the U.S. Navy with the WAVES during World War II and worked as a public information specialist with the U.S. Department of Labor and the President's Committee on Employment of the Handicapped. Her writing and editing career included working for Better Homes and Gardens magazine…
