Court reporters jailed for refusing to testify in criminal cases to speak at Club June 1
Journalists Libby Averyt and David Kidwell both found themselves behind bars in the 1990s for refusing to testify after conducting jailhouse interviews. On Monday, June 1, the two reporters will discuss their experiences going the distance for First Amendment rights at a Club event timed for the start of International Whistleblowers Week. Ticket prices go up June 1 for dinner with CBS News' Norah O'Donnell and NBC News' Luke Russert to honor excellence in journalism and raise funds for the American News Women's Club's journalism scholarships. Garrison Keillor proposes 15 things to make America a better place
Humorist and best-selling author Garrison Keillor, making his first appearance at the Club since 1994, delivered a speech titled “15 things that need to change right away.” In prefacing the speech, Keillor expressed regret that in his 40 years of hosting the “A Prairie Home Companion” radio program listeners had come away remembering nothing in particular that he had said. Program on winning a Pulitzer to be held June 3 at the Club
Club member Amy Ellis Nutt, a Washington Post staffer, will speak at noon on Wednesday, June 3, on her work toward winning a 2011 Pulitzer Prize for feature writing, and what her experience of winning was like. Tips and notes from a Pulitzer winner, open to Club members and the public, will take place in the McClendon Room. It is sponsored by the American Women Writers National Museum.
