Each year, the National Press Club confers its John Aubuchon Press Freedom Award on two people whose actions contribute to the cause of press freedom and open government. Aubuchon was a late NPC president and an ardent advocate of press freedom. This year's honorees both covered the uprisings in the Mideast and both faced horrific repression. New York Representative, Charles Rangel, visited the Press Club on April 17, 2007 to speak on the issue of restoring bipartisanship in a divided Congress. He also discussed issues that his committee, the House Ways and Means Committee, was facing at the time dealing with a split Congress. He focused on members of Congress developing working relationships with those of the opposite parties. During the question and answer session, Rangel also touched on topics such as military spending, trade, and the budget.
