NPC Luncheon with Thomas Frieden
Dr. Tom Frieden, director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), is worried about coughs. In his Sept. 10, 2013 talk at the National Press Club, Frieden cataloged the many types of health threats posed by the many new, deadly, sometimes drug-resistant pathogens loose in today's interconnected global environment. "A virus anywhere is just a plane ride away," Frieden said, and "most of our seafood, fruits and vegetables, and our medication supply comes from other countries."

"Texas isn’t listening to families,” said Texas State Senator Wendy Davis, at a National Press Club luncheon on August 5, 2013. Explaining her recent 13-hour filibuster in the Texas Senate, Davis emphasized that the filibuster was not just about a bill challenging reproductive rights. “It is about the failure of our [currently empowered] state leaders . . . to really be connected to our Texas families,” Davis said, describing how families are struggling with lack of health insurance and defunded public education.

Legendary journalist Helen Thomas, a long-time member of the National Press Club, passed away July 20, 2013 at the age of 92. In 2004, she was interviewed for the documentary "The National Press Club at 100: A Century of Headlines." Here we present an outtake of that interview in which she talks about discrimination against female reporters in Washington, and how that played into a 1959 visit by Soviet Premier Nikita Krushchev.
