The most celebrated American commander of World War I was an associate member of the National Press Club. And the influence of Gen. John “Black Jack” Pershing lives on at the Club to this day. Pershing led the American Expeditionary Forces during the war. When it was over, he wanted the public to understand issues important to veterans. Calling all book lovers: The National Press Club Journalism Institute is seeking authors and volunteers for the 2019 Book Fair and Authors’ Night. The selection criteria and the submission form are available online. Applications must be received no later than Friday, Aug. 30. The National Press Club's Communicator and Events Teams are collaborating to produce a series of programs to convene journalists and communicators with top communications officials from diverse communities. Club seeks runners, walkers for James W. Foley Freedom Run, Oct. 20
The National Press Club is assembling a team of reporters and communicators to participate in the fifth annual James W. Foley Freedom Run in D.C., an event to raise both awareness and funding for journalists' safety, including education and advocacy efforts. The 5K Run/Walk will occur at 10 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 20, in Rock Creek Park Grove 1. WW II veteran, 100, to address American Legion Post 20 on battles after Midway, Sept. 18
Retired Navy Capt. Jack Crawford, a World War II Battle of Midway veteran, will be guest of honor and speaker at a luncheon meeting of the National Press Club's American Legion Post 20 at noon Wednesday, Sept. 18, in the McClendon Room. The speaker portion of the meeting is open to all Club members. It will be Capt. Crawford's second appearance before Post 20. The National Press Club will give its annual John Aubuchon Press Freedom Award this year to a journalist in Kashmir jailed for nearly a year for his reporting and to a U.S. reporter who has doggedly produced important accountability journalism despite harassment from powerful people. Each year, the Club gives its Aubuchon award to one journalist from the United States and one from overseas who bravely pushes to disclose the truth in trying circumstances.
