National Press Club recognizes outstanding journalism July 24
The National Press Club will celebrate outstanding journalistic achievement with its annual awards dinner July 24. Come on out and celebrate! A reception will be held in the Holeman Lounge beginning at 6 p.m., followed by dinner and a program at 7 p.m. in the ballroom. This year, the competition was heated, with 29 more entries than last year. There were also new categories -- breaking news-print and breaking news-broadcast. Tickets are $50 per person. Wash. Post, Virginian-Pilot reporters win Gerald Ford awards for journalistic excellence
Washington Post and Virginian-Pilot reporters won Gerald R. Ford Presidential Foundation awards June 4 that honor journalists for their coverage of national defense and the White House. The Post's Scott Wilson won the award presented at the National Press Club for distinguished reporting on the presidency. Corinne Reilly of the Virginian-Pilot received the award for national defense reporting for a series of stories on a combat hospital in Kandahar. Political TV shows such as “Hardball” are not the reason for a lack of civility in politics, the program's host, Chris Matthews, told a National Press Club luncheon June 4. Former USS Cole Commander Lippold Speaks About Al Qaeda Attack July 10
USS Cole Commander Kirk Lippold, a decorated former commanding officer of the USS Cole, is scheduled to speak on Tuesday, July 10, about the harrowing details of the deadly Al Qaeda bomb attack on his ship in the port of Aden, Yemen, in 2000. NPC Freelance Committee Discusses Whether to Write a Book
Should you write a book? That's the question that the Club's Freelance Committee considered at their meeting May 21. Anna Lafferty, a Santa Barbara, Calif., book designer and professor of publication design in Santa Barbara, CA, offered lots of questions that freelancers should consider before writing. They include who the author is writing for, where it will be sold, why should it be a book, and why would someone read it. Lithuanian journalist, threatened with imprisonment, to appear at Newsmaker
Lithuanian journalist, politician and diplomat Algirdas Paleckis is scheduled to appear at an NPC Newsmaker event at noon Thursday, June 7 in the Bloomberg Room. He is threatened by the state prosecutor in Lithuania with one year in prison for revealing what Paleckis says are “inconvenient facts for the ultra-right Lithuanian government" concerning violent actions in his country in 1991. Paleckis won in the first court, but the appeal session of the court is scheduled for June 12 in Vilnius.
