Werner takes gavel as Club president, noon Jan. 20
Outgoing National Press Club President Mark Hamrick will pass the gavel to his successor, Theresa Werner, at today's Annual Membership Meeting. The event gets under way at noon in the Holeman Lounge. The business portion will begin at about 12:15 p.m. Club officers will also report to the membership on the state of the Club. There is no business requiring a vote of the membership. Membership bills to arrive soon -- without dues increase
When you open your envelope from the National Press Club in the next few days and find the billing for your 2012 membership renewal, please be assured there is NO error in the 2012 dues. They are the same as the dues levied in 2011, following the Board of Governors’ decision to keep the rates at the same level in 2012 as they were last year. The move was announced at the October general membership meeting. Martin Luther King Jr. addressed Club, July 19, 1962
Did you know Martin Luther King Jr. spoke at the National Press Club on July 19, 1962? He discussed non-violent resistance and freedom. You can read a draft of his speech here. Interestingly, the Club's president worried about inaccuracies in the transcript of the speech due to a "not-too-clear" recording. Women choose abortions for economic reasons, clinic director says
Merle Hoffman, owner of the nation’s oldest and largest abortion clinic, Choices Women’s Medical Center in New York, said that abortion is “not politics, but necessity" at a Jan. 17 Newsmaker.
