CSIS scholars say U.S. foreign policy shifting to Asia
Three Scholars from the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) agreed at a Feb. 13 National Press Club Newsmaker news conference that U.S. major foreign-policy concerns are now in Asia and focused on India and China rather than the Middle East. Construction plans require NPC member breakfast location change, Feb. 17
The members breakfast will be served in the National Press Club's Fourth Estate Restaurant on Friday, Feb. 17, from 7:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. due to some much needed repairs to lighting in the NPC's Reliable Source. As always, NPC members should show their membership card to the waiter for service. Regular free coffee service will resume in the Truman Lounge at 10:00 a.m. and the Reliable Source will be open for lunch service.

The National Press Club Journalism Institute’s Professional Development Committee plans to hold a workshop by the U.S. Census Bureau to help reporters navigate the Census Bureau's American Fact Finder database. San Diego ballot could ignite shift in public employee pension plans
If San Diego voters approve a June ballot initiative to end guaranteed pension benefits for newly-hired city employees and offer a 401(k) type retirement plan instead, other cities may soon begin adopting similar approaches, Mayor Jerry Sanders predicted Feb. 13 during a National Press Club newsmaker conference. The initiative, expected to draw strong labor union opposition, is being managed as a citizen-run project and funded through private contributions. NPC loses one of its most senior members, Carl Hartman, 95
Carl Hartman, a National Press Club member for 70 years and one of the Associated Press' longest-serving journalists, died Feb. 5 at his Washington home. He was 95 years old. Hartman joined the NPC in 1942 and became a Golden Owl in 1992. That made him one of the half dozen longest-tenured members of the Club. After graduating from Princeton University in 1936, Hartman first worked as a Broadway publicist before switching to journalism, reporting for the New York Daily News, a newspaper in Puerto Rico and the Jewish Telegraphic Agency before joining the Associated Press in 1944. Free parking available when members dine at Club
All members of the National Press Club receive complimentary evening and weekend parking at the PMI garage on G Street when they dine at the NPC's Reliable Source or Fourth Estate restaurants. Members who are using any of the other Club facilities at night or on Saturday can purchase a discounted parking sticker for $5 at the front desk. Complimentary and discounted parking is available starting at 5pm on weekdays and all day Saturday. The parking sticker will not be valid if you park anytime before 5pm on weekdays. Dag Hammarskjöld Fund for Journalists seeks United Nations fellowship applicants
The Dag Hammarskjöld Fund for Journalists is now accepting applications from professional journalists from developing countries for its 2012 fellowship program. The application deadline is Wednesday, March 30. The fellowships are available to radio, television, print and web journalists, age 25 to 35, from developing countries who are interested in reporting on international affairs during the 67th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
