Hamrick to Launch 'Dinner with the President' Series
Later this month, National Press Club President Mark Hamrick will begin a series of meetings with members titled "Dinner with the President." The first one, with a cross-section of members selected and invited by the Membership Department, will be in the McClendon Room of The Reliable Source. The program builds on an effort begun by then-NPC President Jerry Zremski, who hosted lunches with members to gather their thoughts and suggestions about Club operations and activities. Patrick Okedinachi Utomi, a reform candidate in Nigeria's April presidential elections, will speak at a Newsmaker at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 16. Utomi, who is challening incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan, will outline his platform of job creation, accountability in politics and election reform. Egyptian-style unrest possible if Ukraine fails to expand freedoms, politicians say
Two members of the Ukrainian Parliament warned Thursday that Egyptian-style demonstrations could break out in their country if the government continues to limit the freedom of the people. Bernanke Defends Fed Independence from Short-term Politics
Federal Reserve Board Chairman Ben Bernanke answered congressional calls for audits of the Federal Reserve System with a defense of monetary policy independence from short term political considerations at an NPC Luncheon Feb. 3. All the Fed's financial transactions are reported and available to congressional agencies, Bernanke told a sold-out luncheon audience. The calls for audits, he said, were calls for political oversight of monetary policy decisions.
