Books and Brunch to meet March 19, "Out Stealing Horses"
The National Press Club's Books and Bruch group will meet at noon on Saturday, March 19, at the Fourth Estate to discuss "Out Stealing Horses" by Per Petterson. The group reads and discusses works by award-winning authors and rotates between fiction and non-fiction. It meets at noon on the third Saturday of each month. On April 16, Reynold Price's memoir, "Clear Pictures," will be the subject of discussion. Former Club Presidents reminisce about tumultuous years 6:30 pm, March 28
The National Press Club's three most senior former presidents will reminisce and tell anecdotes about the tumultuous years when they led the organization in a free event, "Tales from the Tap Room," at 6:30 p.m. Monday, March 28, in the Holeman Lounge. John Cosgrove was president in 1961, the year of President John Kennedy's Camelot but also the Bay of Pigs and intensified U.S.-Soviet tension. Allan Cromley was president in 1968, a time of assassinations, protests, political upheaval and the Washington riots. And Don Larrabee was president in 1973, the year the Watergate scandal exploded. Member appeals for help for New Zealand quake victims
Can you imagine an entire broadcast building falling down and crumbling? Can you envision the massive destruction in the well-kept, beautiful garden city of Christchurch, New Zealand? That is what happened when a 6.3 earthquake struck on Feb. 22. There were other earthquakes in September, and a massive series of aftershocks. At the most recent count, 163 were known dead in Christchurch. About 200 people are missing or unaccounted for. Kim Barker will discuss her new book, The Taliban Shuffle: Strange Days in Afghanistan and Pakistan, at the National Press Club Book Rap on March 24, 6:30 p.m., in the Bloomberg Room.
