The Book Fair Committee is accepting applications for the 35th annual Book Fair and Authors’ Night Tuesday, November 13, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The event will raise money for the National Press Club Journalism Institute’s professional training programs, college scholarships and awards for journalistic excellence. Once again the Institute is partnering with the Seed Foundation, which helps prepare under-served students for college and high-performing public boarding schools in the District and Maryland. Club has National Geographic producer Cromley's lucky number
Not many National Press Club members think about their badge numbers. But when Kathleen Cromley joined in November, she made sure her card had five special digits. Raised in Washington, Cromley visited the Club in her youth with her father Allan Cromley, who was president of the Club during the tumultuous news year of 1968. After her father passed away last August, she persuaded the Club membership staff to let her keep her father’s badge number when she joined the Club in November. “He loved the Club and the people he met there. Annual Civil War battlefield tour to go to Antietam June 2
The Club’s annual Civil War battlefield trip will be Saturday, June 2, to Antietam National Battlefield in Maryland, where the bloodiest one-day battle in American history took place on September 17, 1862. Club members and guests will depart by bus from the F Street side of the National Press Building at 9 a.m., returning at approximately 5 p.m. There is no charge, but Club members are limited to one guest each. Houston activist urges U.S. to address basic needs in Afghanistan
Joanne Herring, whom Julia Roberts played in the 2007 movie, "Charlie Wilson's War," urged Congress and the nation at a May 10 NPC event to support her crusade to rescue Afghanistan from the Taliban by addressing basic needs. She urges assistance to end the country's vast illiteracy, poverty and other needs. Book Rap on AP breach of 1945 embargo sparks journalism ethics discussion
Associated Press (AP) correspondent Ed Kennedy broke a military embargo in 1945 to announce the end of war in Europe, an action examined at a National Press Club Book Rap May 9. The Book Rap presented Kennedy's memoir, "Ed Kennedy's War: V-E Day, Censorship and the Associated Press." In May 1945, British and American military leaders invited 17 reporters, including Kennedy, to witness the signing that ended the war with the Germans in Reims, France.
