McDowell Scholarship Established
The family of Charles Rice McDowell Jr. has established a journalism scholarship fund at Washington and Lee University, his alma mater. Mr. McDowell, a longtime political columnist for the Richmond (Va.) Times-Dispatch and a 24-year member of the National Press Club, died Friday, Nov. 5. Book Fair a Success; 11 Raffle Prizes Unclaimed
The 33rd annual Book Fair & Authors Night is history, and hundreds of happy book buyers were seen carrying out bags full of novels, cookbooks, children's books, political and current affairs volumes and histories as they left the Club. "This event has become a mainstay for the club and the community it serves,' said Club President Alan Bjerga, who also served as the raffle master at this year's event. Club Voices Outrage Over Beating of Russian Journalists
The National Press Club called on President Dmitry Medvedev and other Russian authorities in the country to track down and prosecute the perpetrators who severely beat journalist Oleg Kashin. Kashin, a reporter for the Kommersant newspaper, who wrote about topics such as a controversial forest highway project, was attacked by two men early Nov. 6 as he approached his Moscow apartment, according to news reports.
