The inaugural Defence Media Dinner (Defence with a C due to the event’s British organizer) was held this year at the National Press Club on Sunday, October 7, the eve of the annual Association of the U.S. Army trade show at the Washington Convention Center. NPC Broadcast/Podcast Team member Adam Konowe, head of the judging panel, was at the event founded by aerospace and defense industry veteran Peter Bradfield. Konowe interviewed Bradfield, along with journalism judge and communications executive Chris Stellwag of CAE, right after the awards concluded.

IRS Commissioner Douglas Shulman talks taxes April 6
Americans might be still scrambling to get their taxes done today, but Internal Revenue Service Commissioner Douglas Shulman will address a National Press Club luncheon April 6 on what the tax system could look like in the future. Shulman, now in his third year of a five-year term, will outline his agenda in a speech entitled “On the Horizon: A Vision for the Future of Our Tax System.” The 47th IRS commissioner, Shulman is responsible for collecting $2.4 trillion in tax revenues. Former NPC member Arnold Smith, head of PR company, dies
Arnold Smith, a former NPC member, died March 24, in Washington. He was 81. Smith held a variety of posts over his long career, and for more than 30 years he headed Smith & Associates, a public relations company with domestic and foreign clients. Arnold will be buried in a graveside cemetery on Thursday, March 31, at 10:15 a.m. in the Kesher Israel Congregation section of the National Capital Hebrew Cemetery, which is located on land in southeast Washington and Capital Heights, Maryland. Effort to establish school for disabled children in Afghanistan is April 11 Newsmaker topic
Debbie Smith, founder of Operation Exceptional Child/Afghanistan, will discuss how her efforts to build a school to help disabled children in that country will also benefit the U.S. war effort.
