Jamaican Prime Minister to discuss country's "renaissance"; June 9
Jamaican Prime Minister Bruce Golding plans to talk about strides made in reforming the Jamaican government, reducing crime and improving education. With billions in new loan guarantees, Golding says Jamaica is poised for dramatic redevelopment and assuming a position of regional leadership. Travel to Manassas Battlefield June 18; Space is limited, RSVP ASAP
The National Press Club’s annual Civil War battlefield trip will be to nearby Manassas National Battlefield Park on Saturday, June 18. The visit is being made in connection with the sesquicentennial of the First Battle of Manassas on July 21, 1861. Civil War expert Henry Elliott of the National Park Service will explain how the one-day engagement turned into a rout, with fleeing citizens joining retreating Union soldiers on the jammed road back to Washington. Former State Department Negotiator Joel Wit Discusses North Korea
On this edition of Update-1, a former State Department negotiator with the North Koreans offers background on the current efforts to promote nuclear disarmament. Legendary RS bartender Jack Kujawski dead at 72
Jack Kujawski, a legend at the Reliable Source Bar where he served up drinks and wisdom for a quarter century, has died at age 72. A Vietnam veteran, Jack had been ill for several months and was being treated for a condition related to his service. Most recently he had also suffered from a minor stroke, but had returned from the hospital to his apartment. On Thursday evening May 26 a call came in to the Bar with the news that Jack had passed away. Jack first came to the Club in 1986.
