Astronaut Mark Kelly, commander of the last flight of the space shuttle Endeavour, tamped down rumors that he would follow his wounded wife, Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., into politics. “She’s the politician in the family. Club lease remains unchanged after National Press Building sale
Affiliates of AEW Capital Management L.P. and Quadrangle Development Corp. bought the National Press Building this week for $167.5 million from the previous owner, Quadrangle. The new ownership structure should have little impact on tenants in the building, including the National Press Club, because Quadrangle will continue to manage the property. There will be no change to the Club lease. Club Executive Director Bill McCarren has met with representatives of AEW and Quadrangle in recent weeks to discuss the transaction and the new ownership arrangement. Club hails release of journalist hostages
The National Press Club applauded the release of two French television journalists and an interpreter who had been kidnapped and detained by the Taliban in Afghanistan for more than 18 months. Those kidnapped included two reporters, Herve Guesquiere and Stephane Taponier of France 3 Television, and their interpreter, Reza Din. Gregory Jaczko, chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, will address a National Press Club luncheon on Monday, July 18. Jaczko will talk about lessons learned by the nuclear power industry in the aftermath of Japan’s March 11 Fukushima nuclear disaster, which stands as the most serious nuclear accident since the Chernobyl meltdown in 1986. LGBT leader calls New York same-sex marriage bill "game changer"
Rea Carey, executive director of the Gay and Lesbian Task Force, called the New York state legilature's passage of a same-sex marriage bill, "a major turning point in progress toward marriage equality, a game changer" at a June 28 Newsmaker.
