If you haven’t entered your best journalism in the National Press Club journalism contest, there is still a week to go. Because of the COVID-19 outbreak, the deadline has been extended to June 30. Awards for the best work published in 2019 in breaking news, political coverage, broadcast news, consumer news, online news, foreign coverage and news photos are among those being offered. Photo Committee to feature next generation news photographers, July 1
At its next meeting, the National Press Club's Photography Committee will hear from two early-career, yet award-winning photojournalists. The virtual event happens at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 1, and is open to all Club members, with free advance online registration requested. The July 1 virtual meeting will be held by Zoom. Club journalism contest wants to see your best coverage of animals, their welfare
Please send the National Press Club your best stories from 2019 about animals and their welfare as entries for the Ann Cottrell Free Animal Reporting Award. There are separate awards for broadcast and print stories. The deadline is June 30, so get your entries in soon. Send your entry in online, or if you prefer, it can be mailed in to the Club, as long as it is mailed by the deadline. The cost of an entry is free for Press Club members and $75 for non-members. Inaugural Parade Protests
Participants talked to reporters and activists about planned protest activities in Washington for President Bush's second inauguration. Among the issues they addressed were access to the parade route and public events, the message of the protests, and comportment around law enforcement authorities. AWWNM postpones June 24 event to September
The noon June 24 meeting in the McLendon Room of the National Press Club's Reliable Source, featuring scholar Mary Jo Binker speaking on the journalistic writings of First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, is postponed to noon on Sept. 23. Silver Owl Lawrence Lamar Calvert dies from cancer at 82
Lawrence Lamar Calvert, a former Washington representative for the Tennessee Valley Authority and a 46-year member of the National Press Club, died at his home in Oak Ridge, Tenn., on Jan. 26 of cancer. He was 82. Calvert's career with TVA from 1962 to 1993 included being it's top lobbyist with Congress and the White House from 1973 to 1979, a time when the authority faced major environmental and legislative challenges.
