Club outraged at jailing of Iranian blogger and his mother
National Press Club President Mark Hamrick expressed outrage on Aug. 10 at reports that Kouhyar Goudarzi, an Iranian blogger, and his mother have been imprisoned in Iran. The Club honored Goudarzi last year as the international winner of the 2010 John Aubuchon Press Freedom Award after he had been incarcerated for months for the “crime” of speaking his mind. The Club hailed Goudarzi in November at a special ceremony and said his plight represented the abuses of journalists and others in Iran and beyond. Presidential candidate Roemer to assail corrupting influence of anonymous campaign donations, 10 am Aug. 15
Former Louisiana Gov. Buddy Roemer, a Republican presidential candidate, will assert that large, anonymous campaign donations and special-interest money remain a corrupting influence on politics at a Newsmaker at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 15. Conflict Zone, a groundbreaking combat photography exhibit, will be on view from Aug. 8 to Aug. 29 at the National Press Club. Former Club President Allan Cromley dies
Former National Press Club President Allan Cromley died Aug. 8 after a three-month battle with pneumonia and an esophageal ailment. Cromley, who led the Club in 1968, established the Silver Owls. He was instrumental in keeping the Club functioning during the upheaval following the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. "Al Cromley was a stalwart Club member, someone you could count on to uphold the Club's traditions," former Club President Gil Klein wrote in an email. Gary Johnson, former two-term Republican governor of New Mexico and GOP presidential candidate, will speak at the National Press Club on Aug. 19. He will deliver a speech entitled “Republicans and Social Issues: We are Either for Limited Government -- or Not." Nixon enjoyed Club activities before ignominious departure from Washington
This Week In National Press Club History August 8, 1974: President Richard M. Nixon resigns and leaves Washington the following day. Nixon had once said that “the press is the enemy,” but in earlier years, he was often a presence at the National Press Club. As a young senator from California, he sometimes sat in on poker games with reporters at the Club. Photo exhibit deadline approaches, Aug. 19
Entries are due by Friday, Aug. 19, for the 12th Annual National Press Club Members' Photography Exhibition. Photos may be dropped off in the Club Membership Office beginning Monday, Aug. 8. A new video tour of The National Press Club is now available on the Club website. In the tour, former Club President Gil Klein takes the viewer on a comprehensive walk-through of the National Press Building, particularly the Club's home on the 13th and 14th floors.
