Speaker of Kurdish Parliament urges U.S. to reconsider Iraqi pullout
The U.S. and Iraq should reconsider the approaching withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq, Kermal Kerkuki, speaker of the Iraqi Kurdistan Parliament, said at a Sept. 23 Newsmaker at the National Press Club. Kerkuki, who headed a group of Kurdistan parliamentarians on a trip to Washington and other U.S. cities to meet with their legislative counterparts and foreign policy professionals, said he felt strongly that such a pullout would likely result in increased violence and endanger hard-won progress toward human rights and democracy in Iraq. Oct. 3 Speakeasy Night raises the stakes with members-only poker game
Step back in time on Oct. 3 when the Club's 14th floor will transform into a 1920s-style Speakeasy. The Young Members Committee will host an all-ages, members-only poker game in the Game Room, located through the Reliable Source kitchen. The game will begin at 7 p.m. and will include up to eight members who sign up in advance. Other members are invited to join the group in the Game Room, but are reminded that non-members are not allowed to enter the Game Room pursuant to Club House Rules. For some young members, the National Press Club is primarily a place to network or grab free tacos on Friday nights. But for one, the halls of the 13th floor hold a deeper meaning. New Reliable Source buffet items based on newspaper recipes
Every Thursday or Friday--including Sept. 23--there will be an entrée, vegetable dish or starch on the Reliable Source luncheon buffet taken from a recipe printed in Wednesday’s Washington Post or New York Times food section. Occasionally, other newspapers may be the source of the new dish. On Sept. 23, salmon-scallion corn cakes with cucumbers and Cook’s Illustrated Marinated Tofu will be showcased. Tony Perkins, Family Research Council(FRC) president, will explain what “values voters” want in a presidential candidate at a National Press Club Newsmaker at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27. In early October, the Council's political advocacy arm, FRC Action, will host most of the major candidates for the Republican presidential nomination as speakers on the subject of family values in the 2012 election.
