U.S. Foreign Service Officer Peter Van Buren accused the State Department of wasting millions of dollars in Iraq on projects poorly conceived and seldom finished at an Oct. 27 National Press Club Newsmaker press conference. "I saw a lot of money and lives being wasted," said Van Buren, whose book, "We Meant Well: How I Helped Lose the Battle for the Hearts and Minds of the Iraqi People," has just been published. Byrd, Bookman celebrate longest Club tenures -- 73 years
Seen in hindsight, 1938 seems a very, very long time ago. German troops annexed Austria and invaded Czechoslovakia that year, even as British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain promised "peace in our time." Thornton Wilder's classic "Our Town" premiered on Broadway, Walt Disney's ground-breaking "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" enthralled movie audiences and Orson Welles' infamous broadcast of "The War of the Worlds" terrified radio listeners. Oil was discovered for the first time in Saudi Arabia in 1938, the minimum wage wasintroduced in the United States, and the 75th and last reunion of…

National Press Club urges administration to reconsider Freedom of Information Act revision
The National Press Club expressed concern on Oct. 24 about a proposed new Freedom of Information Act rule that appears to require the government to deny the existence of certain documents even when that is not true. Federal agencies have long been able to withhold from public disclosure under the law certain categories of information, including data that pertains to ongoing criminal investigations or that is classified. Under the new Department of Justice proposal, in replying to a request for information under the freedom-of-information law, if the information is allowed to be withheld under…

Levin declares broadcast news delivery ‘stale’ at Club luncheon
The news media needs to change the way it delivers content because the decades-old style of broadcast journalism is stale, Harvey Levin, creator of the celebrity news website TMZ.com, told a National Press Club luncheon Oct. 24. “I think there is a good chance that a lot of people here will be put out of work if the people who run this delivery system don’t change it and don’t change it quickly,” Levin said. Broadcast journalism doesn’t have to use the same formula devised 40 years ago with an anchor, reporter and a prepared package of sound and video footage, said Levin, executive producer…
