Cypriot Foreign Minister: Reunification would help region
Cyprus under total Cypriot rule would improve security, stability and cooperation in the southeast Mediterranean, Erato Kozakou-Marcoullis, the country's foreign minister, said at a Dec. 21 Newsmaker press conference. Cyprus has been divided since l974 when Turkey invaded the northern part of the island nation. Turkish troops remain there. Kozakou-Marcoullis, a former ambassador to the U.S., said Turkey has threatened to mobilize its Navy if Cyprus attempts to extract natural gas from an undersea zone known as Aphrodite. Drilling began in September without incident.

Three NPC members share Dirksen Award
Three National Press Club members - Alison Fitzgerald, Kristin Jensen and former NPC President Jonathan D. Salant - were among the team of Bloomberg News reporters sharing the National Press Foundation's Dirksen Award for Distinguished Coverage of Congress. The reporters won the award for their investigation of outside group spending in the 2010 elections, in which millions of dollars were spent by organizations that didn't disclose their donors and often didn't disclose their spending either. Larrabee, Priebe win top awards, Club honors 70 volunteers with Vivians
Former National Press Club President Don Larrabee won the John Cosgrove Award, and Lou Priebe received the Berny Krug Award for outstanding contributions to the Club, at a ceremony Dec. 16 recognizing the top volunteers of 2011. The event in the Holeman Lounge honored 70 Club members with Vivian Awards for their accomplishments on the Club’s 27 committees. Exhibit reveals strategies to count crowds at protests and rallies
The exhibit "The Science & Art of Crowd Counting" will be displayed Monday, Dec. 19, through Saturday, Jan. 7, at the Club. Digital Design & Imaging Service Inc., and CBS News will sponsor the exhibit, which presents the aerial imaging tools and photo analysis strategies that count crowds at outdoor protests and rallies. Journalists and professional photographers are invited to attend the official exhibit viewing in the Club’s lobby on Wednesday,Jan. 4, at 6:30 p.m. A cash bar and dinner will be available at the Fourth Estate Restaurant.
