Suze Orman, a popular personal finance guru, will speak about her “People First” movement on behalf of consumers to fight banks and their fees. Smiley, the PBS broadcaster, will highlight his efforts to restore the nation’s prosperity as more and more Americans slip into poverty and unemployment. The Newsmaker begins at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 12, in the Murrow Room of the National Press Club.

ICANN CEO to announce launch of new Internet addresses at Jan. 11 newsmaker
ICANN President and Chief Executive Officer Rod Beckstrom and Board Chair Stephen Crocker will announce the launch of hundreds of new generic top-level Internet domains (gTLDs). ICANN's new gTLD program is the most significant change to the Internet's naming system since 1998. For the first time, generic TLDs can include words in non-Latin languages and scripts, such as Chinese or Arabic. The Newsmaker will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 11 in the National Press Club's Zenger Room.

Isikoff to lead discussion after exclusive screening of Clinton biopic
Michael Isikoff, national investigative correspondent for NBC News, will lead a panel discussion about the presidency of Bill Clintonfollowing an exclusive screening of the forthcoming PBS biopic "American Experience: CLINTON." Romney soars in NH poll after Iowa Caucus win
Mitt Romney’s thin win in the Jan. 3 Iowa Republican primary bounced him to 38% in a Jan. 4 New Hampshire poll, seven points above his New Year’s Day standing there, pollster John Zogby said at a Jan. 5 Newsmaker. Rick Santorum gained four points to 11% while Ron Paul dropped one to 24% in the poll of 498 voters definitely or likely to vote in the New Hampshire Republican primary Jan. 10. Club plea for imprisoned Ethiopian journalist published in New York Review of Books
National Press Club President Mark Hamrick joined with other journalism leaders to urge Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to take action against Ethiopia for imprisoning a journalist. Hamrick is one of five people who signed a letter published in the current issue of The New York Review of Books on behalf of Ethiopian journalist Eskinder Nega. Ethiopian authorities arrested Nega in September, shortly after he published an online column calling for an end to torture in Ethiopian prisons and advocated for freedom of expression. NPC's Board of Governors will host In the Mood for News dinner dance on Jan. 28 in the ballroom.
