Liz Carpenter, Lady Bird Johnson's press secretary during her tenure as first lady and president of the Washigton Press Club in 1954, died March 20 in Austin. Carpenter was an advocate for women in all aspects of public life and was instrumental in what Helen Thomas described as "our first foot in the door" at the all-male National Press Club. Club Applauds Senators for Bill to Improve FOIA
The National Press Club lauded a bill soon to be introduced in the Senate that aims to speed up the processing of public requests for documents under the Freedom of Information Act. Two senators who have long championed press freedom and open government legislation, Democrat Patrick J. Leahy of Vermont and Republican John Cornyn of Texas, unveiled the Faster FOIA Act. NPC member Janice Law is seeking a local music group or musician who could play music at the opening of the American Women Writers National Museum. Law, who founded the museum, will host the museum's grand opening on Monday, Feb. 13, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at a storefront a few blocks from NPC.
