NPC Steps Up Its Role in Press Freedom Fight
The National Press Club has taken its fight for press freedom to a new level. In this edition of Update-1, NPC President John Hughes explains to Broadcast Committee Vice Chair Adam Konowe why the club is uniquely positioned to fight for press freedom. Hughes says attacks on the press can impede journalists from getting the necessary information to inform the public and prevent citizens from getting public information from elected officials.

Frosty, Loyal Nats Fan, Wins NPC Snowman Contest
Sophia Donnelly, daughter of Club member John Donnelly, vice chairman of the NPC Board of Governors, is the winner of the NPC Snow Day Snowman Contest. Sophia's well-designed snowman incorporated all the traditions of a typical Frosty but also demonstrated her devotion to the sports teams of the Nation's Capital, despite their mediocre records. 'Scoop' Rescheduled for Books & Brunch, Noon Jan. 16
Evelyn Waugh’s satirical classic, “Scoop,”will be discussed at Books & Brunch at noon Saturday, Jan. 16. The event was rescheduled because of the snow storm. The new date coincides with DC Restaurant Week, so participants will be able to enjoy the traditional brunch selections and also special prices for lunch. Drawing on Waugh’s own experiences in covering the Italian-Ethiopian war in the 1930s, the novel tells the tale of William Boot, a nature writer for “The Daily Beast” who is accidentally dispatched to Ishmaelia, then on the brink of civil war. Risk Reporting Seminars, Jan. 13-15; Free for Members
