What have you done for the Press Club lately? That's the question I constantly ask myself and that I challenged members to answer this year. The Club is a lot of things to a lot of people, and the Club wouldn't be what it is without those same people - its members. Member volunteers are what make the Club the vibrant place it is. It's August in Washington, and we all know that means nothing's going on. Except at the Press Club, of course. August in Washington also means Restaurant Week, and our Fourth Estate restaurant is an active participant in that. Remembering Pioneering Journalist and National Press Club Member Helen Thomas
The passing of longtime UPI journalist Helen Thomas is a sad day for all journalists and especially for women who have followed in her pioneering footsteps. Helen was not only one of the first women to cover the White House, she was among the small group of women who were the first to join the National Press Club in 1971. Press Club Talks With Attorney General Holder on Press Freedom Matters
The National Press Club participated in the most recent small-group meeting with Attorney General Eric Holder to discuss our concerns about the Justice Department's recent subpoenas and search warrants issued against journalists. Press Club Asks For Answers In AP Records Seizure
In the wake of reports today that the Justice Department secretly obtained phone records of several of AP’s reporters and four of its offices, the National Press Club requests that the Obama administration publicly explain the reasons behind the action. The Justice Department disclosed to AP in a May 10 letter that the government had obtained last year two months of personal and professional phone records for individual AP reporters and from AP offices in the House press gallery and from AP bureaus in DC, New York and Hartford, Conn. Marking World Press Freedom Day Here and Away
As we mark World Press Freedom Day here at the National Press Club and around the globe, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on its importance. This day was created 20 years ago by the United Nations General Assembly to highlight press freedom around the world and defend the right of the news media to do its job freely and safely. Those values are things the NPC stands up for on a daily basis. The Club was proud to host the main event in the world for WPFD in 2011 when Mark Hamrick was president.
