President Andrea Edney's Inaugural Address
Good evening Ladies and Gentlemen. By now you all know that I am Andrea Edney. It is my honor to serve as the 111th President of the National Press Club. First, I would like to thank the Academy ... oh wait, this is Washington. I’ve heard it said that Washington is Hollywood for geeks and wonks, but you wouldn’t know it looking out at this well dressed, beautiful crowd tonight. Thank you for being here. Actually, I want to start by thanking my wonderful colleagues at Bloomberg News. For twenty years, they have given me remarkable opportunities. They stand for impartiality, accuracy and…

Farewell, and Thank You
Fellow members of the National Press Club, To say that we had a crazy year is an incredible understatement. When you signed election petitions for the 110th administration to run for office, I am pretty sure that no one counted on such a virulently anti-press year. We launched 2017 with the theme “A Club of Champions.” As your retiring coach, let me start by thanking our leadership team board: Andrea Edney, Alison Kodjak, Derek Wallbank, Ferdous “Danny” Al-Faruque, Jen Judson, Ed Barks, Tom McMahon, Lindsay Law Murphy, Celia Wexler, Patrick Host, Ken Mellgren, Michael Freedman, Past…

Please give to the employee holiday fund
Fellow members, As you travel near and far this holiday season to gather with those you cherish, please don't forget our dedicated National Press Club employees. Every day around the club there's ample reason to thank the staff. Whether it's serving you a plate of delicious food, keeping the restrooms in top order, or making sure that the setup is just right for your booked event, we rely on the 110 staff members who make the club our home away from home. With the season of giving upon us, now is our chance to thank them. I encourage you to show the staff how much we care by donating to the…

A Periodic Update From “The World’s Leading Professional Organization for Journalists™.”
Greetings fellow members. Allow me to offer another playbook update from your club of champions! Much continues to happen in our busy private club. With rare exception, most of it is good, I am happy to report. For those who missed the last general membership meeting. I’d like to begin with a bit of sad news I shared there, and why it was delayed in delivery. Karen Deem, a beloved 17-year member of the National Press Club staff, passed away in last month. Karen, who fell ill serving the club during the photo team’s members exhibit reception, was hospitalized and tragically transitioned on…

A “Club of Champions”: Time to suit up for big plays!
Happy September, fellow members, or should I say, teammates. Some of you have been away with your families. Others have been reporting and communicating non-stop all year with no break in sight. We started off with a bang dealing with unwarranted attacks on journalism which continue. Now many of us are reporting in harm’s way with hurricanes, hate crime marches and military conflicts. Others are trying to make sense for news consumers of the rapidly changing security challenges that face our world. Thank you for placing yourselves on the front lines to tell the truth without fear or favor.…

“A Club of Champions,” First Quarter Time Out and Playbook Update
First, a Thank YouTo say that it has been a shotgun start to the year is an understatement. Many of you have come up to me, written, or called to say, “You picked a heck of a year to be club president!” You’re right. Not only did we have ambitious goals as a team of elected club leaders, we didn’t expect that we would have to become guardians of the first amendment from attacks by the U.S. government. Who knew? Two things I know for sure. First, thank you for your support of your club and electing me as your president. It’s a tremendous honor, it is exhilarating, tiring and humbling…

A note to NPC members on Jan. 19th private client inaugural event
Fellow members, I've received some questions about the event that was held January 19 at the Club, a pre-inaugural rental characterized by the organizers as the Deploraball, and wanted to follow up with you. As you know, the Club has served as a venue for election-related events and parties for many years, held to celebrate incoming presidents from both parties. I want to assure you that in cooperation with the organizers and security personnel, the Club ensured the safety of all members, guests, protesters and attendees. The attendees of the event comported themselves as we would expect…

NPC statement on POTUS, Spicer comments towards journalists
The following statement is attributed to Jeff Ballou, president of the National Press Club. "The National Press Club welcomes a healthy discussion and debate on the stories of the day. However, it's absurd and unacceptable to insult and impugn the motives of credentialed journalists for accurate reporting. Additionally, the National Press Club is alarmed by reports that several media outlets who have regularly been credentialed to cover the White House and Congress were denied credentials related to the inauguration. We do not expect or anticipate the White House to like every story written…

Jan. 19 NPC Statement Regarding Inaugural Event
Dear members and guests, As you are aware, we have a private client very much in the news holding an event on January 19th in support of the 45th President-elect of the United States. Some weeks back, my predecessor wrote a column laying out pretty much everything that could truly be said about it. So I simply repost it here with the emphasis that, as Tommy’s former Vice President, he kept me and the board in the loop on this matter and my view has not changed. http://www.press.org/news-multimedia/president/2016/12/npc-statement-re… Please read it knowing that there is historic precedent, D.C…

Year End Message from Thomas Burr
Happy New Year to all of our members! As my time as president winds down, I wanted to thank all of you for helping the National Press Club continue to live up to its reputation as the world's leading professional organization for journalists. There was no shortage of news this year, and the Club maintained its much-needed voice to defend press freedom in the United States, especially during a challenging election, and around the world. A few highlights of our success this year include: A major renovation of our lobby – including soon-to-be-installed security gates -- to protect our…
