Despite high heat and humidity, the winner of the National Press Club 5K on July 17 nearly set a record. Gurmessa Kumssa Megers ran the course in 15:34, charging through temperatures headed north of 90 degrees, even at this year’s earlier start time, 8 a.m. The event drew 759 participants and recorded the highest number of teams in its 13-year history (http://twitter.com/npc5k). Proceeds support training and scholarship programs at the NPC Eric Friedheim National Journalism Library. “This is the largest turnout we’ve had in recent memory, and gosh knows you suffered for it,” NPC President…

Horton Vows to Make Troops 'Fit to Fight'
Obesity in the military has become a national security issue, fitness trainer Tony Horton said at a Club luncheon July 16, describing his work with military leaders to reduce the rate, which has tripled in the past few years. Horton, who is the marshal for the NPC's 5K race on July 17, discussed his plans to implement a “functional fitness” program in order to improve the health of the military. He said he has been working closely with military leadership to develop a multi-dimensional approach to fitness that will involve elements of his top-selling P90X system of muscle confusion, including…

Free Computer Space Gets Wide Use
When Jamie Bowen’s employer, the Diplomatic Courier, closed its office but kept its staff, he had a choice of working at home or in the Club’s 14th floor work space for members. It was an easy decision. “It’s almost like a newsroom,” says Bowen. He finds the environment more conducive to working than his home. “There’s something about getting dressed up and coming to an office that makes you want to work.” Users of the 14th floor computer space at the Club include all-day-every-day journalists with no office, self-employed writers, associate members who want to log a few client hours between…

Donnelly Praises Government Auditors, the "Unsung Heroes of Transparency"
When I became president of the National Press Club in January, I said I wanted our club members to become vocal advocates for open access to government information. Ensuring that our government continues to operate in the open, and allows reporters and the public access to government information is essential, both to our work as journalist and to our democracy. In that spirit, I’d like to share the wonderful and wise words of our colleague John Donnelly. John was recently honored by the National Press Foundation for his reporting on military spending on weapons systems. In his acceptance…

Alison Fitzgerald Kodjak Inauguration Speech
It's really such an honor - and a little overwhelming - to be standing up here in front of all of you. A lot of amazing people have stood here - in this ballroom, behind this podium. Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan each came here - to the National Press Club - to announce they were running for president in 1976. In 1939 Eleanor Roosevelt was the first woman to address the club. And The Reverend Martin Luther King spoke here in 1962. Which begs the question - what the heck am I doing here? But for tonight, let's just go with it. Before I start saying important things about journalism - I…
