Board Applauds 5K Organizers, Lauds June's Record Financial Results
The Board of Governors on July 19 applauded the three organizers of this year's 5K race for what President Alan Bjerga said was "an innovative, re-invention of a Press Club treasure." The Board also welcomed the news that the Club had generated record revenues and profits in June. Bjerga paid tribute at the monthly Board meeting to Melinda Cooke, membership director; Jessica Brady, the 5K Committee chairwoman; and Melissa Charbonneau, the vice chairwoman, for their tireless efforts in organizing the race, which raised more than $20,000 for scholarships and training programs administered by…

Events Committee Seeks Historian for NPC Lincoln Bicentennial Program
For a program on Abraham Lincoln, God, and Washington media scheduled for Monday, Sept. 20, the Events Committee is searching for someone who can speak for 10 to 15 minutes about the relationship between the Lincolns and the press. Immigration, Freedom of Press Panel Follows La Americana Documentary, 6:30 pm July 21
“La Americana” will be shown at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 21, in the conference rooms. A panel discussion with the producer/director and Suzanne Gamboa, AP reporter on immigration, will follow. The discussion will focus on freedom of the press and speech and a range of immigration issues, including remittances and the role of immigrants in the national economy. The National Press Club’s Books & Brunch group will discuss “Olive Kitteridge,” a novel by Elizabeth Strout, at noon, Saturday, July 24 in the Fourth Estate Restaurant. If you buy a meal and bring your parking ticket from the PMI garage on G Street between 13th and 14th streets, the Fourth Estate will stamp it, giving you free parking. NPC Members See Newly Protected Civil War Battlefield
More than 1,000 acres of battlefield property has been preserved in recent years in and around tiny Brandy Station, Virginia, near Culpeper, site of the largest cavalry battle of the Civil War, National Press Club members were told during a July 10 tour. Clark “Bud” Hall, one of the foremost experts on the June 9, 1863, Battle of Brandy Station and president of the Brandy Station Foundation, said that as recently as December, the Civil War Preservation Trust (CWPT) – with which the Foundation closely works – was able to permanently protect 433 acres that had been planned for a three million…
