Members' Photo Exhibit in Lobby Until Sept. 30
An overflow crowd attended the opening reception of the 11th annual NPC Members' Photo Exhibit on Sept. 2. Club President Alan Bjerga opened the exhibit with remarks recognizing the photographic accomplishments of the Club's member-photographers. The 185 photos taken by 49 NPC members will be on display in the Club's lobby until Sept. 30. Training Committee Meets 8:30 am Sept. 8
The Professional Development Committee will meet at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 8, but the location has changed to the Fourth Estate Restaurant at the round table in the alcove. Club members with ideas for training programs are invited to attend to pitch their ideas. Lunch with former Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, a $500 gift certificate to Theodore's furniture store and a wine caddy with a bottle of wine or champagne are among the items to be auctioned during the Oct. 15 Fourth Estate Award dinner honoring Bob Schieffer. Chertoff is donating his time and a signed copy of his book, "Homeland Security: Assessing the First Five Years." Asian American Journalists Honor NPC Member
NPC member Albert W. Young has been inducted into the Asian American Pioneer Journalists Honor Roll. Young, a Club member since 1995, is a copy editor for the Boston Globe. He was the first Asian-American sports writer a major metropolitan daily when he began his career at the Bridgeport Post-Telegram in Connecticut in 1970. When he lived in Washington, Young was an editor/writer for the sports department at USA Today. Others inducted into the honor roll include Connie Chung, Ben Fong Torres and the late Ken Kashiwahara.

Obama Economist Says Odds of a Double-Dip Recession 'Very Small'
The odds of a double-dip recession "are clearly very small," Christina Romer, outgoing chairwoman of the president's Council of Economic Advisers, said at a Sept. 1 luncheon. She warned that the greatest threat to the economic recovery is the temptation to withdraw growth-inducing policies too soon. The 9.5 percent unemployment rate is at "an unacceptable level by any metric." An expert on the Great Depression, Romer cited the example of 1937-38, when recovery from the depths of the early 1930s led to premature removal of economic support and a subsequent economic decline in 1938. Author Describes 6-Year Imprisonment in Colombia, 6:30 pm Sept. 22
Ingrid Betancourt will discuss her book, “Even Silence Has an End: My Six Years of Captivity in the Colombian Jungle,” at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22, in the conference rooms. Admission is free for Club members, $5 for non-members. Books will be sold for $30. No outside books will be permitted. Betancourt will sign books after the talk. Betancourt was abducted in 2002 while campaigning in the Colombian presidential election and was rescued in 2008.
