Peggy Roberson Dies; Visitation Oct. 1
Peggy Roberson, a longtime Washington reporter for newspapers in Texas and Alabama, died Sept. 22 at age 80 after a long illness. Ms. Roberson was an active member of the National Press Club, formerly serving on the Freedom of the Press and Speaekrs committees. A native of Cheyenne, Okla., she attended Abilene Christian University in Abilene, Texas, before starting a journalism career on the Elk City Daily News (Oklahoma). Jeff Sharlet will discuss his book, "C Street: The Fundamentalist Threat to American Democracy," at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 27, in the Murrow Room. Club Wants Answers On Detained Cameramen
The National Press Club called on the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan to clearly explain the detention the week of Sept. 20 of two Afghan cameramen covering events in that country for global news organizations. The two detainees, Mohamed Nader and Rahmatullah Nekzad, took photos and videos on a freelance basis for Al Jazeera. Nekzad also has worked for the Associated Press.
