Silver Owl Barrett McGurn Dies
Barrett McGurn, 95, a Club member since 1975, died July 2 in Bethesda. He was a foreign correspondent and press secretary, including serving as the Supreme Court's first spokesman (1973 to 1982). After graduating from college, Mr. McGurn worked for the New York Herald Tribune and was an Army journalist during World War II for Yank magazine. After the war, he became the Herald Tribune's bureau chief in Rome and Paris and covered the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, the Washington Post reported. Entries for Members' Photo Exhibit Due Aug. 20; Full Rules Here
Entries are due by Friday, Aug. 20, for the 11th annual NPC Members' Photography Exhibition. Entries may be submitted beginning Monday, Aug. 9. The exhibit, sponsored by the Photography Committee, is open to all NPC members and is not juried. Photos will be on display through September. Club members may submit up to four photos. International Shorts at Documentary Series, 6:30 pm July 7
A series of short films produced by international filmmakers in Washington and New York City will be shown at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 7, in the conference rooms. A panel discussion on freedom of the press and expression with some of the producers and the Washington director of Reporters Without Borders follows.
