Applications Due Nov. 20 for January Journopalooza
A heavy thump of rock and roll will break through the chill of DC’s darkest winter days when stage lights come up for Journopalooza II in the National Press Club Ballroom on Friday, Jan. 8, 2010, and journo-bands are needed. Applications are due Nov. 20. The Club is welcoming submissions from solo artists, rappers, or bands playing funk, crunk, country, hiphop, habanera, bluegrass, zydeco, reggaeton, jazz, blues, pop, or any variety of fusion. Senate Historian Offers Tips on Doing Oral Histories, 6 pm Tonight
Planning to interview your grandparents about the day they met, or that close family friend who was the sole eyewitness to an event that forever changed world history? Member's Play about King Solomon, 8 pm Nov. 13
"The Last Days of King Solomon," a play by NPC member Anthony Gallo, will be presented at 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13, in the Murrow Room. Gallo says the two-act “black comedy ” is about doubt and faith during the latter days of Solomon, long-time ruler of militarily and economically powerful Israel . The legendary monarch, who holds together a diverse nation by shrewd domestic and foreign marriages, has lost God’s favor. Senate Historian Gives Tips on Oral History Interviews
Oral histories should be transcribed as quickly as possible and include indexes, an expert on oral histories said during a presentation at the Club Nov. 9. Senate historian Don Ritchie coached the would-be interviewers to ask open-ended questions whenever possible but to be prepared with more specific follow-up questions, especially to pursue unexpected answers. Ritchie is the author of "Doing Oral History: A Practical Guide" and six other books, four of which are about Washington journalism. The Club has collected some 150 oral interviews.
